Bio

Originally from east London, I grew up in the metropolis. However, I was drawn to the natural world, looking at anything available around me - from leaves and trees to the sky. Through family background in Spain, as a child I was able to spend time in unspoiled nature, and a deeper connection was formed in the rocky foothills of the Pyrenees in Huesca province. I was fascinated by the crystal water of the stream, the sound of the crickets, the silence of the mountains, and the clear nights of the Milky Way right across the sky. A sense of wonder was instilled which has never left me. From a very young age I loved colour and drawing. As a teen, I got interested in photography, both colour and black & white, and I started taking photographs with my first film camera.

Now living in North Wales, I find inspiration in the varied landscape between the sea and Snowdonia. Ideas emerge from local walks, where I take photographs and make sketches to be used as references, or simply from sitting quietly and absorbing the atmosphere. Something in an element of nature such as a tree or water strikes a chord with me and forms the idea behind each piece of work. The image is often found through an explorative way of working, resulting in something between a drawing and a painting.

Another element to my work is human nature - the unique way we perceive the natural world and how it reflects metaphors about our lives. I find being in nature very therapeutic and revealing. Wherever we may live, there is always something, however small, which provides an opportunity for reflection and solace. Creating art is a response to that experience, an embodiment of the idea I perceive.

Artistic influences include Van Gogh, Hiroshige and Munch.

Art Background

I studied fine art at West Surrey College of Art and Design, graduating with a BA Honours degree in 1993. A highlight was taking part in a group project painting a landscape mural in an elderly people's home. Afterwards I focused on photography for many years, and countless hours were spent developing film and photos in a darkroom. Occasionally, my work somehow found its way into print editorially. In 2000, I was the winner of a national student photographic competition held by The Guardian, and in 2001 I completed studies in photography at City of Westminster College, gaining a BTEC National Certificate with distinction. I continued to draw in my spare time, along with workshops in printmaking and etching.

In 2010 I made a life change and left London for north Wales, where peaceful and open surroundings allowed me to return to my roots in painting and continue evolving as an artist. I have taken part in group exhibitions including Oriel Ynys Môn, Anglesey and the Royal Cambrian Academy in Conwy, and my paintings have sold into private collections around the world.

In recent years, I have learned a lot about developing my practice and the professional art world through the Working Artist, a masterclass created by the wise and wonderful Crista Cloutier.
