Detail from a recent experimental drawing on board - watercolour paint on oil mix paint ground.
This autumn I've been watching and waiting for leaves to fall into the stream, to watch them sail downstream.

A soft pastel drawing I made recently in Boduan Sanctuary, which is both a wood and burial ground.
In this peaceful wood by the road I found one of the older trees, a pine, and I sat down to draw while a robin befriended me. The drawing wasn't my best, but when I held it up to the light, shadows worked like magic to echo the melancholic atmosphere of the place and reminded me of the shadow theatre of the past.

Unbelievably, summer is here, in some shape or form!
These butterflies were created by my neighbour's children in an activity we did recently. First, paint a simple background on card. Next, fold a strip of paper and cut B-shapes out of it. It makes the shape of a butterfly. Add a blob of fairly wet paint onto the butterfly. Fold in half and press the wings together (very gently!). Open the butterfly to see its unique pattern. When the paint is dry place the butterflies onto the painted background card. And there you have it, a summery decoration full of fluttering butterflies!

Soft pastel and pencil drawing of brimstone butterfly.
I watch a butterfly stop to rest, lighter than a feather. It is so delicate, often with frayed wings. I ask myself, how can it survive so well in this world? Its power is invisible, yet it must be there nevertheless, power which allows it to sail through this troubled world.
